Author Michelle Alexander has joined the New York Times’ Opinion pages, the paper announced in a press release on Thursday.

Alexander penned The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness which shed light on the criminal justice system and it’s role in racial oppression.

She will serve as the paper’s only Black female columnist.

“She is a powerful writer, a fierce advocate for a more just world and a deep believer in open-minded, searching debate over how to achieve it,” said New York Times editorial page editor James Bennet.

Alexander, a civil rights attorney, has written for the Times and the Washington Post and served as a director of the Racial Justice Project for the ACLU of Northern California.
