The ex-Michigan state trooper responsible for the death of 15-year-old Damon Grimes has been charged with murder.

43-year-old Mark Bessner tasered Grimes while he was illegally driving a vehicle in late August. Shock from the taser caused the Detroit native to crash the ATV into a truck. The accident killed the teen.

Tasering someone from a moving vehicle is in violation of the Michigan State Police policy.

In a statement released Wednesday, Col. Kriste Kibbey Etue denounced Bessner’s actions.

“Troopers are not trained to do what Bessner did and we condemn his actions. His conduct was criminal in nature and deserving of the charges … authorized by Prosecutor Kym Worthy,” she said. “Neither my apology nor these criminal charges will bring Damon back, but I hope they provide some amount of solace to his family.”

Bessner will be arraigned on Thursday. He resigned from the force in mid-September.
