The road to the White House looks a bit clearer after Mitt Romney scored a hard-fought triumph in his native state of Michigan and won in Arizona on Tuesday night. Chief GOP rivals Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich are now seen as taking a backseat to the former Massachusetts governor as Romney’s victories cement his status as his party’s front-runner.
Romney, viewed as the best candidate to beat President Obama, has the backing of the Republican establishment, but has still shown an inability to relate to his base by winning with roughly 41 percent in Michigan. The “too moderate” option for president knows the stakes are high for him, saying, “We didn’t win by a lot, but we won by enough, and that’s all that counts.”
