Less than a year after being elected to the country’s House of Representatives, Shyne is now appointed leader of Belize’s conservative opposition party. According to a report from Slate, the former Diddy protégé was officially sworn in last Thursday, June 24, and has now become one of Belize’s most powerful politicians.

Born in Belize City, Shyne, whose real name is Moses Barrow, watched as his father became leader of the country’s United Democratic Party in 1998, and later the first Black prime minister in 2008. After serving time in prison for a nightclub shooting, which also involved Diddy and his then-girlfriend Jennifer Lopez, Shyne was deported to Belize, and appointed the country’s musical goodwill ambassador.

“Officially sworn in as Leader of the Opposition for Belize! Thank God for the perseverance and iron will to continue on to this point despite all challenges and difficulties,” he wrote in his Instagram caption. “Thanks to my family, my Mesopotamia Constituents, and my Opposition colleagues in the House of Representatives whose trust and confidence in me has put me in this position to receive this responsibility and privilege of a lifetime to serve as Leader of the Opposition.”He also shared a few inspirational words to the Belizean youth who may be watching his new role with anticipated breath.

“This moment in history will forever serve as an inspiration to all people from all backgrounds, especially the youth, the disadvantaged, and the impoverished. There is nothing beyond [your] reach.”
