A 12-year-old boy is dead after police say he was shot and killed while helping his father Friday night.

The Washington Post reports that five hooded teenagers were hanging outside of One Stop Liquor and Beverage in Cleveland when the unidentified suspects opened fire at them.

Sgt. Jennifer Ciacca, a spokeswoman for the Cleveland Police Department, said the boy and his dad were inside of a beauty supply store housed right next to the liquor store owned by the child’s dad, when the gunfire erupted. They went outside to see what the commotion was about and that’s when Abdel Latif Bashiti was shot to death.

At the time, Bashiti’s family was hosting relatives from out of town. Everyone was shocked by his sudden death. Bashiti’s aunt, Rashan Bashiti described her nephew as a kid who had a love for sports and enjoyed time with his family.

“He was just one of the most lovable kids you’d ever meet,” Mohammad Mator, a friend of Abdel’s father’s, told the paper.

While no one is in custody, police do believe that the shooters were teens.

Bashiti’s death comes during a time when the city of Cleveland is experiencing a growing number of homicides in recent years.

The city clocked 136 homicides last year, up from 120 in 2015 and 102 in 2014.
