Nevaeh Spillman, a student at Maple Park Middle School, is breaking preconceived gender norms. The 13-year-old is the lead quarterback at her North Kansas City, Missouri school, according to Fox 2 St. Louis.
Spillman spoke about the trepidation of the feat. “I was so nervous in the beginning because I had never played for a school. I’ve always played in leagues.”
The teen has played the male-dominated sport since she was 4. Her teammates don’t seem to mind her gender.
“She does have a good arm,” said Daivion Allen, Spillman’s teammate. “It doesn’t matter whether you are a girl or boy quarterback. It matters what you do on the field. Nevaeh can do a lot on the field.”
The Maple Park quarterback would like to inspire other girls who want to play football. “Most girls don’t get recognized for playing this kind of sport, so when you hear people talking about you, it makes you feel good.”
