14-year-old Joshua Smith of Detroit has been charged with first-degree murder and using a firearm during a felony for the murder of Tamiko Robinson, his mother. When authorities asked why he shot his own mother, Smith said he was "tired of being called names."

The weapon used in the murder was a shotgun, which belonged to the boy's stepfather, and Smith's younger sister and stepfather were in the house at the time of the shooting. "His mother was real sick and she called him every time she needed something, and he was tired of that," LeShaun Roberts, the victim's brother, explained.

Smith, who was in ROTC and on the swim team, also was attempting to get into a gang and dabbled in drugs.

Should he be treated like a juvenile, or is his crime worthy of adult punishment?
