Boston city councilor Ayanna Pressley defeated Democratic Rep. Mike Capuano, a 10-term incumbent, in the Massachusetts primary for his U.S. House seat on Tuesday, sending shockwaves throughout the Democratic party.

Pressley, 44, is almost certain to be elected to office in November since she will not be facing a Republican opponent in the midterm elections.

Once she takes office in January, she will be the only Black member of Massachusetts congressional delegation and the first Black woman to represent the state, per multiple reports.

Her win is seen as a pushback to the status quo within the Democratic party by a base seeking younger, female and candidates of color and has been likened to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Primary win over Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley in New York in June.

In her victory speech on Tuesday, Pressley sharply criticized President Donald Trump.

“Our president is a racist, misogynistic, truly empathy-bankrupt man,” she told her supporters. “It is time to show Washington, D.C., both my fellow Democrats, who I hope will stand with us and Republicans who may stand in our way … change is coming and the future belongs to all of us.”
