A newly elected Pennsylvania prosecutor could bring the first criminal charge of sexual assault against comedian Bill Cosby, legal experts announced Wednesday.
Kevin Steele defeated opponent Bruce Castor in the race for district attorney in Montgomery County, where Cosby’s first named accuser filed a 2005 complaint against him Tuesday. But the statute of limitations runs out in January on that case.
Like many of his accusers, the woman claims Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted her in his mansion in 2004.
In the weeks leading up to the election, both Steele and Castor vowed to work to charge Cosby if elected.
According to experts, the action would likely come easier than it did ten years ago, when a district attorney declined to file charges citing weak evidence.
