If you’re smart, you won’t tune into Fox News for anything of substance. And while most of us aren’t surprised or fazed by anything that comes out of Bill O’Reilly’s mouth, his latest remarks about Maxine Waters did cause a stir.

During an appearance on Fox & Friends, the O’Reilly Factor host took shots at the California rep’s hair by likening it to that of the late James Brown’s.

O’Reilly’s remarks came in response to a video of Rep. Waters speaking out against Donald Trump and some members of the Republican party’s ideas of patriotism.

“We’re fighting for the democracy,” the 78-year-old legislator said. “We’re fighting for America. You’re not nearly as patriotic as we are.”

O’Reilly was then asked to share his thoughts on Waters’ remarks to which he replied, “I didn’t hear a word she said. I was looking at the James Brown wig.”

O’Reilly was immediately called out for his remarks by Fox & Friends co-host, Ainsley Earhardt.

“You can’t go after a woman’s looks. I think she’s very attractive,” she said.

“I didn’t say she wasn’t attractive,” O’Reilly responded. “I love James Brown. But it’s the same hair James Brown had.”

O’Reilly then went on to answer the original question regarding Waters’ passionate speech on the congressional floor.

“You’re all wrong about Maxine Waters,” he said. “She’s a sincere individual. Whatever she said, she believes. And that’s old-school. We’re giving Maxine a break here. I love you Maxine.”

O’Reilly wrapped up his remarks by inviting the congresswoman on his show. The commentator has since issued an apology to Waters, saying that he respected Waters “for being sincere in her beliefs.”

In a statement issued Tuesday afternoon, O’Reilly expressed regret for the remarks.

“I said that again today on Fox & Friends calling her ‘old school.’ Unfortunately, I also made a jest about her hair which was dumb. I apologize.”
