For the first time in the history of the U.S. Census, African-Americans who mark “Black” on their census forms regarding their race will have the chance to submit information about their origins in 2020.

The United States Census Bureau, otherwise known as the Bureau of the Census, is the leading agency of the U.S. Federal Statistical System. It has a mission of being the primary “source of quality data about the nation’s people and economy,” the agency’s website states.

According to NPR, although the Census is attempting to gather more specific information on the African-American population, but some Blacks cannot identify their origins because they do not know.

For the 2020 census, the U.S. Census Bureau has altered some of its questions. One of them is related to how Black people are asked to designate their race.

Most likely, you will see new space under the box for “Black or African-American” where you are to write in non-Hispanic origins, such as African-American, Nigerian, Ethiopian, etc.

“The Census Bureau has reportedly attempting to respond to calls for more detailed disaggregated data for our diverse American experiences,” NPR states.
