Kenzie Smith, one of the Black men who had the police called on them by a White woman in California in April for barbecuing in a park, is running for Oakland City Council, Mother Jones reports.

Smith, 37, filed paperwork to run for Oakland’s Park and Recreation Advisory Committee after he was nominated for the position, according to The Hill.

Smith, who has been collecting signatures required to accept campaign donation and to build a campaign staff, is running on the campaign to help the homeless, provide rights to renters, education and job placement for youth, according to Mother Jones.

The East Bay resident gained prominence after being seen on video, taken by his wife Michelle Snider, cooking in a park in Oakland when Jennifer Schulte—better known as “BBQ Becky”— was on the phone with police saying that he was not allowed to cook with a charcoal grill in the park.

“I hear you have a problem with these gentlemen having a barbecue here at the lake. What’s going on?” Snider can be heard saying in the video. “Are you sure it’s not because you don’t want black people out here.”
