The body of an Army National Guardsman who was trying to rescue a woman was found in Maryland on Tuesday, CBS Baltimore reports.

Sgt. Eddison Hermond went missing during flooding in Ellicott City, Maryland on Sunday. His body was found in the Patapsco River in Baltimore County, Howard County police confirmed with CBS.

“He, along with some other folks, went back to assist her and unfortunately during that effort they saw him go [under the water] and not surface,” Police Chief Gary Gardner said.

Gardner said that Hermond was at a Mexican restaurant before he went out to help.

His aunt Nina Cooper said the two spent Saturday together and that she is grateful she got a chance to see him before he died.

“We were glad that we got a chance to spend just a moment with him before all this tragedy took place,” she told WJZ. “To see him and now he’s gone, it is a shock, it is a shock. But wow, the love and support from the community, it’s amazing,” she said.

Maryland’s governor, Larry Hogan expressed sympathies on Twitter.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I order Maryland flags to fly at half-staff across the state in honor of Sergeant Eddison Hermond,” he wrote. “His service to our country, state, and local community will not soon be forgotten. Flags will return to full-staff sunset of the day he is laid to rest.”

A GoFundMe page was set up for his memorial.
