Brooklyn BreYanna Stevenson, 31, probably didn’t think the world would know her name, especially due to her untimely death.

According to News 4, Stevenson was found dead Monday in an Oklahoma hotel. Around 2:30 a.m., police received calls of a disturbance at the establishment, but have few leads.

“Right now, there are no arrests in this case. Anyone with information, we want to hear from them through our homicide tip line,” Oklahoma City Police spokesman MSgt. Gary Knight said Monday.

Knight also said that he could not go into the details surrounding Stevenson’s death. “I can’t go into the type of trauma they had,” he said, “or what we believe killed him.”

Knight added that it’s still too early in the investigation to determine if Stevenson’s transgender identity played a role in her death. No motive has been uncovered in the case.

Stevenson’s death has raised concerns in Oklahoma City’s trans population.

Trans advocate Sophia Schonauer, who knew Stevenson briefly, called her murder “heartbreaking.”

“When I found out [Monday] night; it broke my heart. I’ve gotten to know Brooklyn a little bit. I knew how hard she was trying and how much she was working to establish her identity and to establish a place in the world for herself. We don’t know what happened,” Schonauer said. “But the questions in every transgendered person’s mind, out here in Oklahoma City, is what happened and I really hope justice is served. It’s a deep concern.”

According to GLAAD, 2016 was the deadliest year on record for the transgender community. Twenty-seven murders were reported, nearly all of which were trans women of color.
