You know you are living in a country of shame when Congress has to pass legislation to get your nation’s president to condemn White supremacy.
Well that’s exactly what happened Wednesday when the White House announced that President Trump will “absolutely” sign a resolution condemning the hate, particularly the actions that took place in Charlottesville over the summer.
CNN reports that Congress passed the bipartisan joint resolution in an effort to publicly condemn both the Charlottesville violence as well as “White nationalists, White supremacists, the Ku Klux Klan, neo-Nazis, and other hate groups” earlier this week.
The move serves as one last push to get Trump to sign the resolution, which explicitly condemns the racist gathering that resulted in a peaceful protesters being fatally struck by a vehicle driven by a White supremacist.
On Tuesday, the House passed the joint resolution unanimously, one day after it was effortlessly approved by the Senate.
According to White House press secretary Sarah Sanders, Trump “looks forward” to signing the resolution, which comes one week after he faced criticism for condemning “hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides” following the unrest in Virginia. During his speech, Trump equated the actions of White supremacists to those who were protesting them.
