A Florida couple who had recently got engaged died after being struck and killed by a driver who was operating a vehicle headed in the wrong direction, Thursday evening.

According to the Tampa Bay Times, 24-year-old LaShay Waiters proposed to Yvette Alexandre, 21, just last month in front of a room full of loved ones.

Alexandre, who said yes to Waiters proposal, surprised her husband-to-be with news that she was pregnant.

Now, those same family members are preparing for two funerals.

“They had a great future together,” said Waiters’ mother, Tamika Snipes.

Officials say a driver slammed into their vehicle while traveling on I75, causing a violent head-on crash.

The driver was identified as 21-year-old Justice Lakin. He also died as a result of injuries incurred from the crash.

The incident is being investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol.

Waiters and Alexandre were both Florida natives who met at the University of Central Florida in Orlando.

“I’d like to know why he was driving on the opposite side of the highway,” Alexandre’s father, Robert, said.

A toxicology report on Lakin is pending.
