Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson was killed Sunday morning after being struck by a drunk driver.

The driver who killed Jackson and ride-sharing operator Jeffrey Monroe was initially reported to be named Alex Cabrera Gonsales. As it turns out, that was an alias for the reckless driver. Gonsales’ given name is Manuel Orrego-Savala, a Guatemalan citizen who has twice been deported back to his home country, once in 2007 and again in 2009, according to ESPN.

Jackson and Monroe were stopped on the highway of Interstate 70 in Indianapolis when they  were struck by Orrego-Savala, who was intoxicated, according to police.

The accused was arrested after attempting to flee on foot. He is currently being held in the Marion County (Indiana) jail while officers work with federal immigration officials. Investigators are also hoping to file criminal charges against the undocumented resident.

Jackson and Monroe were on the side of the interstate when Monroe pulled over to help Jackson, who was sick. Driving a Ford pick-up truck, Orrego-Savala drove onto the emergency shoulder and hit the rear of the car. One of the bodies landed in the center lane of the I-70, according to police.

“We were heartbroken to hear the news of Edwin Jackson’s passing,” the Colts said in a statement. “Edwin was loved by all in the Colts organization. We admired his outgoing personality, competitive spirit and hard-working mentality. He was well-respected among all with whom he crossed paths, and he will be greatly missed in our locker room and throughout our entire organization.

“We also understand that another person lost his life in the accident, only adding to our sorrow on this day. We are shocked and saddened by this tragedy, and our thoughts and prayers are with the families of both men during this difficult time.”
