The New York hospital center that dispatched paramedics and treated Eric Garner as he died after being placed in a chokehold by a New York City police officer will pay $1 million to his family.

Richmond University Medical Center reached a confidential settlement with the family. It is not part of the $5.9 million agreement announced by the city in July.

The figure was disclosed in court documents filed in Surrogate’s Court on Staten Island. Garner, a 43-year-old Black man, died during an encounter with police on July 17, 2014.

Video of the arrest showed him yelling, “I can’t breathe!” after Officer Daniel Pantaleo wrapped his arm around Garner’s neck as he was wrestled to the ground for selling loose cigarettes.
