Six Baltimore police officers who escaped charges connected to the 2015 death of a 25-year-old Black man were celebrated at a right-wing gala on Thursday.

New York Daily News reports the officers received a standing ovation at the Media Research Center’s annual black tie gala while honorary speakers reportedly downplayed the seriousness of police brutality in the country.

“In April of last year, six Baltimore police officers were transporting Freddie Gray to jail and he died en route,” Fox News contributor Deneen Borelli told audience members. “Immediately someone made the accusation that Freddie Gray had been killed by the police. The accusation grew and grew – fed by the left, political agitators, and the national media – to advance the anti-police narrative. Soon there were riots in the street.”

Gray did not die en route, he actually died a week after his encounter with members of Baltimore’s police department. Charges were dropped against all six officers indicted in his death this July.

“These five men and one woman, all veteran police officers, were now in handcuffs, fighting for their lives, their careers destroyed, bankrupted, humiliated,” Borelli said.

The crowd erupted in cheers and applause as Borelli called up three of the six officers: Brian Rice, Edward Nero and Garrett Miller, who all remain on administrative duty pending an internal review for their role in Gray’s death.

“No one apologized for ruining their lives,” Borelli said. “No one thanked them for their service or recognized their honor. Who will thank these officers? Who will thank all police officers … at a time they are being so vilified? Tonight, ladies and gentlemen, we will.”

The Virginia-based Media Research Center was founded in 1987 and prides itself on exposing “the propaganda arm of the Left: the national news media,” according to its website. Its founder, L. Brent Bozell, is backed by the billionaire Mercer family, which is also a big donor to the Trump campaign.
