Hundreds of people attended the funeral of Botham Jean, the unarmed Black man who was shot and killed in his apartment by a police officer, at a Dallas church on Thursday, CNN reports.

Family and friends shared touching messages about Jean, saying he was “faithful,” “the biggest extroverted accountant you’d ever find” and had a smile that “lit up a room.”

“We serve others through the messages we send. … You’re successful when you help others. Not just when you’re most able but most anytime,” said Alexis Stossel, a friend of Jean. “Gosh, he was so successful, wasn’t he? He was always in service of others, even when it wasn’t convenient for him.”

Jean was shot and killed by 30-year-old Amber Guyger on Sept. 6, after the off-duty cop told authorities she thought Jean’s apartment was her own and saw the front door ajar, according to reports.

Witnesses disputed Guyger’s claim that the door was slightly open, saying they heard her knock on the door and yell, “Let me in, let me in” before she fatally shot Jean in the chest.

The Dallas City Council held a session on Wednesday that turned emotional when Jean’s killing was brought up, according to CNN.

People in attendance expressed confusion as to why they weren’t given adequate answers over the incident and why it took days for authorities to charge Guyger in Jean’s death.

Protesters interrupted the meeting, chanting, “No justice. No peace,” forcing Mayor Mike Rawlings to call a recess, according to reports.

Guyger was arrested and charged with manslaughter, the Texas Rangers confirmed. She was released on a $300,000 bond  Sunday.

“He was the light. He didn’t look at color. He loved everybody,” said Griffin of Jean. “He was a person who would give you the shirt off his back and his sole purpose in life was to make humanity better, just to make you a better person, a better human.”
