According to a private autopsy ordered by his family, Stephon Clark was shot eight times from behind or the side reports The New York Times. Clark is the 22-year-old unarmed Black man was gunned down in his grandmother’s backyard by Sacramento police.

Dr. Bennet Omalu is the private medical examiner hired by the family to conduct the private autopsy. Dr. Omalu came to the conclusion that of the 20 times Clark was shot at none of the bullets entered through the front of his body. The findings suggest that Clark was shot once in an armpit, twice in the neck, once in the leg and four times in his lower back.

The family’s attorney Benjamin Crump said in a statement that the findings go against the police account of the incident. “These findings from the independent autopsy contradict the police narrative that we’ve been told. This independent autopsy affirms that Stephon was not a threat to police and was slain in another senseless police killing under increasingly questionable circumstances.”

The police narrative of the incident alleges that officers opened fire because Clark was moving threateningly with what they believed to be a gun in hand. No firearm was found at the scene.

“Our autopsy has shown that he was shot repeatedly in the back — which is certainly not characteristic of someone menacing officers or preparing an imminent attack,” Mr. Crump said.

The Clark family believes that city officials are trying to cover up the misconduct by the police officers. Sacramento County Coroner’s office did an autopsy but did not publicly release the result nor did they confirm the cause of death.

Protests have erupted throughout Sacramento over the national issue of unarmed people of color dying at the hands of police. Al Sharpton delivered the eulogy for the young father of two.
