As complicated as American racial issues can be, we can only imagine how many levels of nuance and context permeate the race situation in South Africa. The country is only a couple decades away from a period of government mandated discrimination, and situations such as the country-wide controversy over the type of sexually suggestive but (relatively) tame ad poster you could find in any issue of Esquire or Vanity Fair remind us that there still is much work to be done.

Are we surprised at how controversial this ad seems to be? Also, can we imagine an image that would cause a similar nationwide uproar in America?
