Former Vice President Joe Biden believes that voter suppression tactics have “absolutely, positively, without question” increased in the United States.
Biden spoke to CBS This Morning co-host Norah O’Donnell on Wednesday when the conversation veered onto a group of Black senior citizens who were told to get off a bus when they were trying to vote early in Georgia.
He also commented that efforts by Georgia’s secretary of state, Brian Kemp, who’s running as the Republican candidate for governor, has placed 53,000 voter registration applications on hold; hinting that it is racially motivated, per CBS News.
“Seventy percent of those are African American. Surprise, surprise,” Biden said.
Biden, who is rumored to be mulling a 2020 presidential election run, believes that the U.S. should have automatic voter registration and that voter ID laws are too restrictive.
“My name is Joseph R. Biden, Jr. If I show up and I don’t have a license that says ‘Joseph R. Biden’ or doesn’t have ‘Jr.’ on it, then I can’t vote?” Biden said. “This is designed to suppress the vote, not allow the vote.”
