A 23-year-old lesbian woman was brutally murdered just days before the New Year, Huffington Post reports.

Kerrice Lewis was reportedly found in the trunk of a car following police response to reports of gunfire on Adrian Street in Washington, D.C.

Investigators arrived at 7:30 p.m. and found a vehicle set ablaze. After the fire was contained, officers found the body of an unconscious woman–later identified as Lewis–who suffered from gunshot wounds in the trunk of the vehicle.

D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services arrived, and found the woman to have “no signs consistent with life,” police said.

Neighbors told police they heard multiple gunshots near where Lewis was found. Shortly after, they saw a fire.

Lewis’ grandfather told  Fox 5 DC that he felt like his heart had been ripped out of his chest.

He also described his granddaughter as a “free spirit” and “full of life” who “would light up a room, just talking and laughing.”

Lewis, who was orphaned at a young age, was also remembered by Mercedes Rouhlac, her best friend and former girlfriend. According to Rouhlac, the pair would talk daily. She said that on the day of Lewis’ death, she “just kept call her” and was wondering why she didn’t answer her phone.

Others affected by Lewis’ sudden death called out the media for its lack of coverage regarding the incident, particularly lesbians or color.

No motive or suspect is currently in custody.
