Athens local, Mariah Parker, 26, took her oath of office for County Commissioner of District 2 not on any religious text but with her hand on Alex Haley’s The Autobiography of Malcolm X.

Parker is known as a progressive in her community. In a photo that is now viral, the young woman is seen with a raised fist and afro on the steps of City Hall in downtown Athens, Georgia with her mother, Mattie Parker by her side while being sworn to her seat on Tuesday, June 5, 2018. She won the election edging out her opponent by only 13 votes and fills the seat vacated by Harry Sims who plans to run for mayor, reports Online Athens.

In February, when Parker began her campaign, she told the Red & Black, an independent weekly student newspaper serving the University of Georgia, “My platform centers around economic and racial justice. The policies of this town have been structured, deliberately, to ensure that a certain class of people will continue to thrive and a certain class of people will continue to not.”
