Jordan Davis and Lucia McBath

Lucia “Lucy” McBath is running for a congressional seat in Congress in the state of Georgia to represent the sixth district. She is the mother of Jordan Davis, who was killed by Michael Dunn in 2012 in Florida because his music was too loud. Davis was killed not long after Trayvon Martin in very similar circumstances. Dunn was arrested and charged with murder. He was sentenced to life without parole in 2014.

In an article published by Vanity Fair, McBath writes her reasons and motivations to run for Congress. Among them were the death of her son and bringing an end to gun violence.

McBath secured the Democratic party’s nomination in July and is one step closer to becoming a member of House of Representatives. McBath’s platform includes expanding Medicaid, background checks for all firearm purchases and raising the age limit to 21 to purchase a firearm and passing permanent middle-class tax cuts. McBath has pledged support for the Dreamers, equal pay for women, two-state solution for Israel and Palestine, legislation to help combat climate change and move towards renewable energy, investment in infrastructure, expanding rights and protection to the LGBT community and protection for women who are victims of violent acts of crime. According to her campaign website, she is against dark money in politics and will fight to rein in the effects of Citizens United decision.
