After a White woman called the police on Kenzie Smith, for using a charcoal grill during a BBQ at an Oakland park, has been recommended for an open seat on the Parks and Rec Advisory Commision by City Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan.

Kaplan says Smith is “very committed to making sure that this troubling incident can lead to positive outcomes and therefore he wanted to see about serving on the parks commission.” The commission board is responsible for helping to craft rules for the city’s parks.

He was at the center of a video that captures Jennifer Schulte as she called 911 to report him for using a charcoal grill at Lake Merritt. The clip has now gone viral amassing more than two million views and has gained Schulte the nickname “BBQ Becky.” She has become the Internet’s new favorite meme and even made an appearance on the season finale of Saturday Night Live.

It is up to the city council whether or not Smith will join the commission.
