During the fall of 2015, a convicted felony sex offender threatened to commit mass murder at Howard University. On Wednesday, John Edgar Rust was arrested and charged for making the cyber threat.

The 26-year-old wrote a post on Reddit and the anonymous imageboard website 4chan expressing his racially motivated hatred for students at the Black university based in Washington, D.C. On Nov. 15, 2015, the Alexandria, Va., resident wrote:

“I left MU [University of Missouri] yesterday because I couldn’t put up with it anymore. I go home to Maryland and what do I see? The same old s***. Turn on the news and it’s always the n***** causing trouble everywhere. So I’ve decided. Any n***** left at Howard University after 10 tomorrow will be the first to go. And any of those cheapskate n***** who try to get out using the metro will regret that choice real fast.”

According to Fox 5 Washington, D.C., he also added: “Sure, the po po will take me down, but I’ll go out a hero knowing I made the world a better place.”

He concluded the post by writing: “After all, it’s not murder if they’re black.”

Almost two years later, local police traced the IP address under which the post was made and connected it to a Panera Bread in the man’s hometown. Rust was prohibited from using the web after being convicted of aggravated sexual battery and indecent liberties with a child by a custodian in 2012.

On Wednesday, he was charged with transmitting threats over the internet by a federal court. If found guilty, Rust could be sentenced to five years in prison.
