A recent poll conducted by March of Dimes reveals that traditional gifts, such as flowers, cards and candy, aren’t what most moms really want this Mother’s Day. The nonprofit, whose mission is to fight for the health of all moms and babies, partnered with The Harris Poll to survey more than 1,000 mothers of young children and find what matters most to them. The results might not be what you expect and reveal that the U.S is falling short in supporting moms.

A staggering majority of moms (87 percent) believe that maternal and child health care need immediate improvement. This is especially true among black moms. The poll found that 70 percent of black moms strongly agreed with this statement.

These findings are why March of Dimes wants to make this Mother’s Day about giving moms what they really want—and more important, what they really need.

“We support a mom before, during and after her pregnancy, whether or not things go according to plan,” says March of Dimes President Stacey D. Stewart. “This Mother’s Day we are focusing on the would-be moms, those who’ve struggled to become moms, those spending Mother’s Day in the NICU and those who haven’t had an easy journey to motherhood.”

The organization is encouraging legislators, community leaders and everyday people to become involved in its advocacy efforts to raise awareness of the persistent and urgent issues many expectant and new mothers face in our country. An important part of these efforts involves driving donations from these stakeholders to fund solutions that include programs, research, support and more.

The poll indicates almost unanimous support for a campaign like this. Over 90 percent of moms agree the holiday should be about supporting them, not just gifts. This includes better access to fair, affordable health care and parental leave policies.

“We need policies, not just flowers,” says John Gerzema, CEO of The Harris Poll and author of The Athena Doctrine: How Women (and the Men Who Think Like Them) Will Rule the Future. “March of Dimes helps us recognize that we need to understand and support moms with paid maternity leave and by improving prenatal care.”

Moms and babies in the United States are facing a public health crisis. Premature birth (birth before 37 weeks of pregnancy) and its complications are the #1 cause of death of babies in the United States. A recent study found that the U.S. is the only developed country where the rate of women that are dying of pregnancy-related complications is rising.

The Harris Poll findings are a sign that the country must do better by their moms and March of Dimes has risen to the challenge. Their Mother’s Day campaign is an important part of their efforts to raise awareness and make long overdue progress to ensure the health of all moms and babies.
