Michael Bloomberg announced that he’s re-registering as a Democrat less than a month before the midterm elections in a move that hints that he’s thinking of a 2020 presidential run.

This latest move isn’t out of the ordinary by the former New York City mayor. He left the Democratic party in 2001 when he first ran for office and registered as an Independent in 2007, while still in office, per HuffPost.

“At key points in U.S. history, one of the two parties has served as a bulwark against those who threaten our Constitution,” he wrote on Facebook and Instagram on Wednesday. “Today, I have re-registered as a Democrat – I had been a member for most of my life – because we need Democrats to provide the checks and balance our nation so badly needs.”

Last month, The New York Times reported that the 76-year-old billionaire is considering running for President in 2020, telling the newspaper that his views no longer align with the GOP.

“It’s impossible to conceive that I could run as a Republican — things like choice, so many of the issues, I’m just way away from where the Republican Party is today,” he told the Times in September. “That’s not to say I’m with the Democratic Party on everything, but I don’t see how you could possibly run as a Republican. So if you ran, yeah, you’d have to run as a Democrat.”

Bloomberg has been working through political groups to flip control of the U.S. House of Representatives in November to Democrats and has been a critic of President Donald Trump.
