Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari is reportedly in negotiations for the safe return of over 100 girls who were recently kidnapped from the Government Girls Science Technical College in the Yobe State. CNN reports the leader is hoping to avoid taking military action in his effort to bring back the school-aged children who were abducted on February 19th.

“We are trying to be careful. It is better to get our daughters back alive,” Buhari said in a statement. The girls were reportedly kidnapped by members of Boko Haram, a Jihadist militant organization who previously kidnapped almost 300 girls in 2014. While the group terrifies almost anyone in their path, members of Boko Haram have taken particular aim at schools due to their belief that western civilization and education should be forbidden.

President Buhari tweeted about the mass kidnapping on March 2nd, condemning Boko Haram for it’s “cowardly attacks.”
