The National Rifle Association (NRA) has taken legal action against the state of Florida for alleged violation of the Second Amendment. Florida Governor Rick Scott signed a new bill into law raising the legal age of firearm purchases to 21.

The bill, Senate Bill 7026 also known as the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act was signed on Friday (March 9). The lawsuit by the NRA came just hours after Gov. Scott signed the bill. Lawyers for the gun association are asking a federal judge to block the new restriction.

The new measures include raising the minimum age to buy a rifle and creating a “guardian” program allowing school staff to carry handguns. The gun reform comes after the mass school shooting that took place on Feb. 14 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., which claimed the lives of 17 people.

Major retailers such as Dick’s Sporting Goods and Walmart has since changed their stores’ gun policies to try to defeat the immediate issue.
