A high school senior was handcuffed and arrested by NYPD safety agents on March 26 for using a pin to hold his glasses together. According to the school PTA letter, the Park Slope Collegiate student has been attending school for weeks with the pin in his glasses. School safety agents took his glasses, as they claimed the posed a safety risk. Classsmate Britney Brazela, 15 told the New York Daily News, “Three or four cops jumped on him. They pushed him into a wall and then onto the floor. While he was going down, his elbow accidentally hit one of them in the face.” The young man was then arrested and held in a room by NYPD officers. After talks between school administrators and police, he was released without any charges, but the Youth Court served him a summons for disorderly conduct. The Internal Affairs Bureau and the Civilian Complaint Review Board are investigating the incident.
Dominick R. Wise, 30, died late Monday morning after police say he was intoxicated and resisting arrest. Around 8pm on Sunday, March 29, an unidentified Culpeper, Virginia officer noticed Wise displaying “erratic behavior” as he walked in circles in the middle of the street. The officer called for additional officers to approach Wise. According to the Free Lance-Star, Major Chris Settle stated, Wise was “non-compliant with officers’ commands and actively resisted arrest by swinging and kicking at officers.” Then an officer deployed a Taser. Major said that Wise became unresponsive after paramedics arrived. CPR was administered at the scene. Wise was taken to Culpeper Regional Hospital. He was later airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, where he died. Virginia State Police are investigating the incident, and the town police will conduct its own internal affairs investigation.
Baytown police shot and killed 21-year-old Benjamin Quezada after midnight on March 31 after police said he resisted the command to drop what resembled an AR15 assault rifle, according to KHOU. Investigators found it to be an air-powered pellet gun. Police were called to the intersection West Texas and Gaillard to a report of an armed man in camouflage stationed in the middle of the street. Police stated that he refused to drop his weapon. After the third command to drop his gun, police said he turned toward the officer and pointed the rifle at him, and police opened fire at Quezada. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Baytown police and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office are investigating the shooting.
On Tuesday, the FBI identified the driver who died after a stolen vehicle was crashed into a police cruiser at the National Security Agency in Fort Meade on March 30 as Ricky Shawatza Hall, 27. However, according to The Baltimore Sun, a close friend said Hall was a trans woman who went by the name Mya. A second person, who was in the vehicle with her has been identified as Kevin Lamont Fleming, 20, of Baltimore, who remains in the hospital . Authorities have not confirmed that gunfire killed the driver or injured the passenger. The incident did not appear to be a planned attack or related to terrorism but may have been a case of a wrong turn, according to authorities. Allegedly, the driver ignored police commands to stop the vehicle. Police fired at the SUV as it accelerated towards cruiser, but it is unclear how the officer and the two people involved were injured. The SUV involved in the incident was reported stolen from a Howard County motel on U.S. 1 in Elkridge, south of Baltimore, where the people involved in the incident had briefly stayed on Monday.
