Philando Castile was fatally shot by a police officer in 2016 during a traffic stop in the Falcon Heights area of Minnesota. Castile worked at J.J. Hill Montessori Minnesota Magnet School as the nutrition services supervisor. He was known for his helpful attitude and is reported to have paid for lunch meals for students who could not afford it.

Now, Philando Feeds the Children, a charity founded in honor of the late 32-year-old has helped with the lunch debts in the school district where Castile worked. All 56 Minnesota schools within the Saint Paul Public Schools district had the lunch debt paid off.

An update on the charity’s website read, “That means that no parent of the 37,000 kids who eat meals at school need worry about how to pay that overdue debt.” The statement continued, “Philando is still reaching into his pocket, and helping a kid out. One by one. With your help.”

Philando Feeds the Children raised over $150,000 to help feed the children of St. Paul. Pamela Fergus, the charity organizer, and Metro State professor would use the remaining funds to help future students. The charity was initially started as a class project but is working to secure official non-profit status in Minnesota.
