East Pittsburgh police shot and killed an unarmed Black teen who tried to flee a traffic stop on Tuesday night, The New York Times reports.

Antwon Rose II, 17, was a passenger in a car that the Allegheny County Police Department said matched a description of a vehicle involved in a shooting in a nearby community.

Video of the shooting was posted on Facebook on Tuesday which shows two people running away from police cars before shots rang out. The 17-year-old can be seen falling on the ground.

“Why are they shooting?” the woman recording the video can be heard saying. “All they did was run and they’re shooting at them!”

The executive director of the ACLU of Pennsylvania, Reggie Shuford, said that East Pittsburgh police “disregarded the basic humanity of this boy.”

“Fleeing from a scene does not give law enforcement the right to indiscriminately shoot young boys or anyone. No one, especially children, should ever fear death at the hands of police. Lethal force should be an absolute last resort, not a first option,” his said in a statement obtained by CNN.

Pittsburgh’s mayor, Louis Payne, said that the officer who shot Rose was sworn in only hours before the incident, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

S. Lee Merritt, a lawyer representing Rose’s family, said in a statement to the Times that the family doesn’t know much about “the circumstances surrounding his death.”

“We must emphasize that rumors of him being involved in a separate shooting are unsubstantiated. We know that he was not armed at the time he was shot down, that he posed no immediate threat to anyone, and that, significantly, the driver of the vehicle he occupied was released from police custody.”

Multiple 911 calls earlier in the night on Tuesday said that there were was a shooting in North Braddock, Pa. and that a 22-year-old man was shot in the abdomen from a gunman in a vehicle that matched the car the Rose was a passenger.

“I’m very confident that that was the vehicle involved in the shooting,” Superintendent Coleman McDonough said. “We believe he was hit three times. He was hit in various places on his body.”

Rose has been described as a good kid by those who knew him. He was a senior poised to graduate at the end of the year from Woodland Hills High School

“He was an excellent student,” said superintendent Al Johnson.
