A young, pregnant mother of three was fatally shot by police in Washington.

23-year-old Renee Davis was five months pregnant when she was killed by King County sheriff’s deputies during a well-being check Friday night, reports the Seattle Times.

Davis had struggled with depression, and sent a text message to someone earlier that evening that said she was in a bad mood, according to her foster sister, Danielle Bargala.

Bargala, a law student at Seattle University, said Saturday that she, along with other family members, are left trying to piece everything together. The sheriff’s office declined to comment beyond what was said Friday night  — that deputies who were investigating a report of someone suicidal, found a young woman with a handgun and two small children in the home.

The children, ages 2 and 3 were Davis’, Bargala said. The single mother’s third child, age 5, was at a family friend’s home at the time of the incident.

Bargala said that while her sister owned a hunting rifle, she was not sure about a handgun.

“She loved hunting,” Baragala said.

Bargala also said she had never known her foster sister to be violent, or even to harshly discipline her kids.

“She was such a soft person,” Bargala said. “It’s really upsetting because it was a wellness check. Obviously she didn’t come out of it well.”

Further details are pending.
