The hip-hop community is in mourning after the death of a young Chicago rapper.

Artist Fredo Santana was just 27 years old when he was discovered unresponsive by his girlfriend in his Los Angeles home on Saturday.

The cause of his death remains unknown to the public.

But fans of the musician were familiar with Santana’s addiction to lean, a mixture of cough syrup and soda. The concoction is frequently referenced in rap music.

In October, Santana, who also fathered an 8-month-old son, shared he’d been hospitalized for liver and kidney failure.

Following his hospitalization, the rapper revealed via Instagram he was considering going to rehab for his drug abuse.

“Hopefully I can be the face to sho n**gas to slow down an we got our whole life ahead of us f**k being rock stars gettin high I got ptsd,” he wrote in a post. “I was running from my old life tryna get high didn’t want to face them demons…I’m getting help I might just go to rehab.”

In mid-November, 21-year-old rapper Lil Peep died of a suspected drug overdose. Like Santana, the artist, who abused prescription drugs, was also open about his struggle with addiction and mental health.
