Rep. Keith Ellison (D-Minn) is looking to become Minnesota’s next attorney general, multiple outlets report.

He filed his paperwork to be Minnesota’s top lawyer on Tuesday and announced the news on Twitter.

“Today I am announcing my candidacy to be the People’s Lawyer, and to protect and defend all Minnesotans as your next Attorney General,” he wrote.

In 2007, Ellison became the first Muslim elected to Congress and currently serves as deputy chair of the Democratic National Committee.

State Sen. Patricia Torres and state Rep. Margaret Anderson Kelliher filed paperwork on Tuesday for Ellison’s congressional seat, according to CBS Minnesota.

The six-term congressman represents Minnesota’s 5th District.

“Keith Ellison continues to create watershed moments for the American Muslim community with his ascension in American politics,”  Robert McCaw, government affairs director for the Council on American-Islamic Relations told HuffPost.

Ellison will run against former Attorney General Mike Hatch, Rep. Debra Hilstrom and Matt Pelikan, who received the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party’s endorsement, in August’s primary.

If he wins, he will most likely compete against state Rep. Doug Wardlow, who is backed by the state’s Republican Party.
