Some of the best and brightest activists, entertainers and leaders in the world have went to and/or graduated from Morehouse College. As one of the most prestigious HBCUs in existence, the school has boasted the likes of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Spike Lee and of course, Samuel L. Jackson.

And according to Watch the Yard, Jackson was expelled from the post-secondary institution for locking board members in a building for 48 hours in protest of the school’s curriculum and governance. One of the people held hostage was reportedly Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s father, Martin Luther King, Sr.

During the height of the civil rights movement in 1966, Watch the Yard reports that Jackson enrolled in the Atlanta HBCU. In 1968, the year that he was assassinated, King’s body was brought the Atlanta to be laid in state at Spelman College, which is just across the way from Morehouse.

Jackson reportedly attended King’s funeral and served as an usher. He then reportedly flew to Memphis to join an equal rights protest that changed his way of thinking.

“I was angry about the assassination, but I wasn’t shocked by it,” he recalled in an interview with Parade regarding his reactions to King’s death. “I knew that change was going to take something different – not sit-ins, not peaceful coexistence.”
