A panel reviewing the Texas jail where a 28-year-old Illinois woman died last summer after being taken into custody has called for an overhaul of its procedures and facilities, WGN reports.
The panel, which issued its recommendations Tuesday, says a new jail is needed due to the inadequacy of the current one. The panel also called for improving digital access to information about inmates and arming staff with body cameras.
Bland, who was Black, died in the Waller County jail three days after being detained following a traffic stop. Authorities ruled her death a suicide, but her family disputes that claim.
