An Onalaska, Texas superintendent has apologized for comments he made on Chron.com’s Facebook page on Monday saying “you can’t count on a Black quarterback,” according to Chron.com.

Superintendent Lynn Redden said he thought he commented to a friend in a private chat between the two, but instead his comment appeared on Chron’s Facebook page about a story of the Houston Texans’ latest loss to the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.

That may have been the most inept quarterback decision I’ve seen in the NFL,” he said about a play by quarterback Deshaun Watson. “When you need precision decision making you can’t count on a Black quarterback.”

He told Chron.com that he “totally” regrets the remark.

A screenshot of Redden’s comment was sent to Chron.com by Matt Erikson, who also commented on their page.

“It’s important to make sure horrible words are met with consequences, especially for those in powerful positions with influence,” Ericksen said.

Redden said that the comment was not intended to be racist, but he understands that it could be interpreted that way and that he was talking regarding Black quarterbacks’ statistical success.

“Over the history of the NFL, they have had limited success,” he told the site.
