Jacob Zuma, the President of South Africa, has just resigned from office, effective immediately.

On Wednesday, Zuma announced he was leaving office during a televised address to the African nation.

“I have therefore come to the decision to resign as the president of the Republic with immediate effect,” Zuma said.

On Tuesday, the African National Congress, South Africa’s current ruling party, asked Zuma to step down from office.

“Even though I disagree with the decision of the leadership of my organization, I have always been a disciplined member of the A.N.C,” said Zuma.

Zuma ruled over South Africa for nine years, but his tenure was filled with corruption scandals.

Current A.N.C head, Cyril Ramaphosa, will act as interim president, the New York Times reports.
