Spelman College is convening a task force to provide recommendations on whether the all-women’s HBCU will admit transgender students, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports.
President Mary Schmidt Campbell included the information in the campus’ welcome back letter posted to the private school’s website Thursday.
Spelman is the latest prestigious women’s college to consider admitting transgender students.
“Ingrid Hayes, vice president for Enrollment Management will convene a task force that makes a recommendation to the president on the admission and enrollment of transgender students,” President Campbell said in a statement. “We anticipate a report from both groups by the end of the academic year.”
The transgender task force is one of two Campbell is creating to review campus issues. Dr. Darnita Killian, vice president for Student Affairs, will oversee a task force on emergency planning.
If passed, Spelman will join Barnard College in New York and other members of The Seven Sisters association of historical woman’s institutions in the northeast have already enacted policies admitting transgender students.
Reports from both groups are expected by the end of the school year.
