A morning radio show host who once said “Hitler was right” and promoted conspiracy theories won a Republican primary for a Missouri House seat on Aug. 9, The Kansas City Star reports.

Steve West beat four other challengers in a race for Missouri’s 15th District. He defeated his opponents by nearly 25 points.

West has said on his KCXL show that Jewish people are “harvesting baby parts” through Planned Parenthood and that they torture and molest children, per reports.

He also praised Hitler on a 2017 show.

“Looking back in history, unfortunately, Hitler was right about what was taking place in Germany. And who was behind it,” he said.

West has drawn ire from the Anti-Defamation League for his anti-Semitic, Islamophobia, racist and homophobic comments.

“I’m trying to get sense of why he flew under the radar, and I’m not sure I have a great answer,” said Karen Aroesty, regional director of the Anti-Defamation League. “What is a person who is elected into a position of power going to do with beliefs like this?”

Despite winning the GOP primary, Republicans have distanced themselves from West and his “disgusting comments.”

“Steve West’s shocking and vile comments do not reflect the position of the Missouri Republican Party or indeed of any decent individual,” a rep said in a statement to the Kansas City Star. “West’s abhorrent rhetoric has absolutely no place in the Missouri Republican Party or anywhere. We wholeheartedly condemn his comments.”

The Kansas City Star spoke to West, who said that Hitler comments were taken out of context and that everyone is created equal, but that ideologies should be treated differently.

“Jewish people can be beautiful people, but there’s ideologies associated with that that I don’t agree with,” he said. “Jews today are a remnant of the tribe of Judah that rejected Christ.”

West also said that Islam isn’t a religion, but a political movement and that it should be stripped of its religious benefits.

He reportedly did not apologize for his comments.
