Two members of a Florida SWAT team have been suspended for responding to the Parkland shooting without permission.

The Florida Sentinel reports that the members are from the Miramar Police Department. They were reportedly on duty and headed to Marjory Stoneman Douglas high school where a gunman opened fire, killing 17 people last month.

According to department officials, the men created a safety issue with their decision and were suspended as a result.

The officers’ union feels differently.

“While it may have been a violation of policy to not notify their supervisors that they were going there, their intentions were brave and heroic, I think,” Broward County PBA President Jeff Marano said Wednesday.

Detective Jeffrey Gilbert and Detective Carl Schlosser were the SWAT officers who responded to the call. One of them reportedly told supervisors he was in Coral Springs when the gunfire occurred, police spokeswoman Tania Rues said.

“They were both close by,” she said.
