Republican Senator Ted Cruz said that he wished his opponent for U.S. Senate in Texas, Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-Texas) and Democrats, “weren’t so quick to always blame the officer” when speaking about the Dallas cop who killed an unarmed Black man in his apartment earlier this month, The Hill reports.

“It’s possible what happened was a horrifying and horrific misunderstanding, or it may be something else,” Cruz told Fox 26 Houston on Sunday. “And that’s why we have a legal justice system, to actually learn what the facts are and learn what happened. I wish Beto O’Rourke and Democrats weren’t so quick to always blame the police officer, always attack the police officer.”

Amber Guyger, 30, told authorities that she entered Jean’s apartment on Sept. 6 thinking it was hers and shot him because she thought he was a burglar.

O’Rourke spoke about Jean’s slaying at a rally last week in Dallas, Fox 4 Dallas-Fort Worth reports.

“There has to be a full accounting for how young black men continue to be killed in this country without accountability, without justice, without these full investigations, without respecting their civil rights. This cannot continue,” O’Rourke said.

When asked if Guger should be fired from the Dallas Police Department, O’Rourke said that he believes she does.

“I don’t understand given the actions how anyone can come to any other conclusion,” he said.

Cruz said that people are upset about the Botham Jean shooting, but that they shouldn’t “jump to conclusions.”

“[Guyger] may have been in the wrong. She’s facing legal proceedings and if a jury of her peers concludes that she behaved wrongly, then she’ll face the consequences,” he said. “But I don’t think we should jump to conclusions. It may have been just a horrific understanding with horrifying consequences.”
