On its face, it would seem like a governmental policy that gives companies incentive to hire American workers and for Americans to purchase U.S.-made products. But this is the Trump administration — the Bizarro White House. So up is down, in is out and backward is forward.

At a ceremony in Kenosha, Wis., President Trump signed a new policy that he says “declares that the policy of our government is to aggressively promote and use American-made goods and to ensure that American labor is hired to do the job.” He says poor enforcement of existing “buy American” laws has harmed the American manufacturing complex. Further, he wants to crack down on employers who misuse the H1-B visa program, which allows companies to temporarily hire workers in specialized fields like IT, science and engineering.

But all Trump’s new policy really does is ask federal agencies to propose reforms to those programs,” reports CNN.com. It asks for a review of waiver use and seeks better enforcement of laws regarding buying American made products by the government and American iron and steel products backed by federal money.

That would be really believable if Trump’s own company wasn’t so deeply invested in foreign-made products itself. Trump admitted to CNN’s Jake Tapper in 2015 that apparel from his Donald J. Trump Collection clothing line is made in China. “I talk about my ties in speeches. I’m open. I say my ties many times are made in China,” he said. “It’s very hard to have apparel made in this country.”

In his hotel chain, Trump International, pretty much all of the materials you find in it are made elsewhere, from headboards to the beds, which come from China to the ice bucket, made in Thailand, to the Trump brand vodka, made in Israel, according to Business Insider.

Even his daughter Ivanka, who also has a top selling clothing line, depends on other countries to put together the materials, namely China, Indonesia and Vietnam. In fact, she got a greenlight on two trademarks for her company the same day she met with Chinese president Xi Jinping at Trump’s Florida retreat.

The president has long called for reforms in American trade policy and most notably took the country out of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, one of former President Obama’s signature trade deals. He is said to be aiming at the North American Free Trade Agreement next.
