On Sunday, Donald Trump suggested that a protester who interrupted his rally at a Birmingham convention center the day before “should have been roughed up.”

Mercutio Southall Jr. is a well-known activist in the city. He has been repeatedly arrested while protesting against the unfair treatment of Blacks.

A fight broke out, prompting Trump to call for Southall’s removal. At one point, Southall fell to the ground and was surrounded by several white men who appeared to be kicking and punching him.

A reporter for the paper who was standing in the crowd watched as one of the men put his hands on Southall’s neck and heard a female spectator repeatedly yell, “Don’t choke him!”
