History was made at the American military college West Point on July 2 when a Black man became the academy’s first Black superintendent, Black Enterprise reports.
Lt. Gen. Darryl Williams made history when he became the 60th president of the military academy last week. He’s the first Black person to hold that post in the school’s 216-year history.
Williams, who graduated from West Point in 1983, has served in high-ranking positions in Europe and Asia, according to the St. Louis American. He’s replaced Lt. Gen. Robert L. Caslen Jr.
Wiliams was recently commander of NATO’s Allied Land Command in Turkey, per Black Enterprise.
West Point’s class of 2020 has 186 African-Americans out of a class of 1200, according to Black Enterprise.
