The United States government has reportedly been inspired by companies like Blue Apron to revamp the nation’s food stamp program.

Fox 25 reports that Budget Director Mick Mulvaney described the new program recently, and it’s one that would give SNAP recipients food boxes instead of funds meant for food.

In a statement, Agriculture Secretary Soony Perdueelaborated on the proposed plan.

“USDA America’s Harvest Box is a bold, innovative approach to providing nutritious food to people who need assistance feeding themselves and their families — and all of it is homegrown by American farmers and producers,” he said. “It maintains the same level of food value as SNAP [Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program] participants currently receive, provides states flexibility in administering the program, and is responsible to the taxpayers.”

The Harvest Box would go the households who receive at least $90 a month in SNAP. Instead of receiving all of the funds on their government-issued preloaded food debit card, recipients would reportedly receive a box of food items like shelf-stable milk, grains, juice, pasta, cereal, beans, peanut-butter, canned meat, canned fruits and veggies and either poultry or fish.

Families would also be required to pick up their Harvest Box, which would be valued at about half of the recipient’s monthly benefit, according to reports.

The remainder of their benefits will be available on their debit card.

According to the Trump administration, the proposed transformation plan would save #130 billion over 10 years and would reduce the possibility of fraud.
